DepEd offers alternative learning program to Iloilo inmates
Early next year, interested inmates of the Iloilo Rehabilitation Center based in Bgy. Nanga in Pototan can have access to the alternative learning school (ALS) program of the Department of Education (DepEd).
This was disclosed by Iloilo Provincial Planning and Development Office (IPPDO) chief Mario Nillos.
Nillos said that the Iloilo provincial government and the DepEd are now conducting a study on how the program will be implemented.
He said the provincial government is looking forward to improving the skills and literacy of the inmates.
The official said that the ALS is in the list of projects to be funded by the P1-million already appropriated by the provincial government.
In addition to the ALS, the provincial government in cooperation with the Iloilo Technology and Livelihood Development Center, also offered a free training on candle making to some 50 inmates.
It will be followed by trainings on other handicrafts and Christmas décor making.
Nillos said the inmates are presently engaged in several projects such as swine and goat raising, poultry, fishery and cutflower and vegetables growing. (PNA)
